There are some men who are, in a word, irresistable. There's no formula for irresistable. Looks don't matter. Nothing matters. It's either there or it's not. Bogart is the perfect example. Just look at him: narrow shouldered and balding, grim-faced with bad teeth. Somehow he made it look good. It's in the walk, the talk, the eyes, the confidence. Undefinable but undeniable. And Bleu by Chanel is how he smells.Chanel always does well with male fragrances. Like many 'new' fragrances, Bleu is a revival of a classic. It was a very popular men's cologne in the 1930s. The war impacted perfume production as it did everything else, and Chanel largely gave up its line of fragrances for men for a number of years.In 2010, Chanel brought in fragrance desigher Jacques Polge to translate the old formula into something viable for this decade and relaunched Bleu. Polge understands what contemporary tastes demand and he is not above designing for the widest possible audience. But he exercised a little discretion here. We have lots of what's popular, but with a little sting in the tail, a little surprise that raises Bleu above the contemporary herd. Pogue's trademark mens' scents rely on two notes...the big whomp of musk and lots of citron. But here, he doesn't stoop to conquer. Bleu has its citrus...a dry tang of grapefruit right at the top. But there is much more going on here. Lots of woodsiness with a strong Cedar presence. It blends perfectly with the grapefruit and the two temper each other. Then you get a nice undercurrent with some interesting aromatics. Black pepper. Basil. Maybe some rosemary. No cliches. It's clean and precise and inviting at the same time.For men who are still wearing the same aftershave they wore in school, or who aren't sure what to choose, this is an easy answer.* Bleu by Chanel is utterly modern but reminiscent of the old school fragrances that make us comfortable. Women love Bleu. One whiff and all you want to do is place your head on that lovely spot between a man's jawbone and his shoulder and stop a while.This could be the best go to fragrance gift for any male. It's light enough for men in their 20s, but grown up enough for any age.*As much as I hate to reveal this, and as much as I will deny it if asked (as would any woman), Old Spice is the only old fogey fragrance that's evergreen, sexy as all get out, and no slouch in the hard-to-resist category. Go figure.
