By JJSebastian
I bought 4 of these to monitor a farm for a friend of ours. They all work fine in temperatures from 20-90 Degrees F, and dusty dirty conditions. The software runs in internet explorer as an active-x so the cameras be used with standard web-cam type software. Well I couldn't figure out how anyway.Using IE just adds to the memory load and reduces the reliability of the system. Also the Active-X and Internet explorer combination gets to be a real CPU hog when running 4 cameras with motion detect on, so use a decent PC if that is your plan. The software has a bunch of features, but also is buggy sometimes, which is one more reason I would love to use stand alone web-cam software....The night vision is good for close monitoring, as is the lens of the cameras, but far away isn't great so don't think your going to make out a face from 50' away.Bottom-line: They do what they say, are inexpensive and they have been out in a barn for 6 months running with no problems other than needing to reboot the PC every few days...

By Sandy Coyne
The camera is excellent. All the features work as advertized on the camera side. Looking at the front, the six IR LEDs don't look like much, but they really do let you see the far side of a large room in the dark. Wireless works nicely. The web interface and ActiveX control are terrible. The administrative config menus are buggy and slow, but eventually they get the job done. The worst thing for me is that sound in the ActiveX control doesn't work properly with IE9 on Windows 7 (64). So for me, the camera has no audio in either direction. I ended up using third-party software rather than stick with the buggy built-in web interface, but as far as I can see, Foscam only supports sound through their own proprietary ActiveX control and none of the third-party tools support their custom sound interface.Bottom line: If all your PCs are old, or if you don't care about audio, then you'll love this camera.

By RL
I have 4 FI8918W and 2 of these FI8909W units. The 4 FI8918W all work well for over a year and I never had issues with transmission distance or reliability.Of the 2 FI8909W cams, one of them works reliably but the other developed transmission issues and locks-up after a period of a week. I think I traced the lock-up to motion detection. Initially within the first 6 months of use I never had any issues using the same setting/location and motion detection activity; however recently, I've either had to unplug the unit or turn off motion detection to have it work "reliably". Unplugging the unit essentially rebooting the camera fixes the issue but if motion detection is left on, it will stop working after 3-4 days (photos/motion are being triggered and emails sent during this timeframe)and then I'll have to reboot by unplugging the unit. So I've finally decided to turn off motion detection and after 1 week of use it hasn't locked up yet.If I didn't have a need for a thinner profile camera, I'd only purchase the FI8918W cameras. But at least my other FI8909W works reliably--and it has been transmitting over a greater distance and through walls.
