If the around your ear size with soft breathable material, very comfortable light weight and one of the best sounding open headphones is what you are looking for, here they are! Headphone selection can be complicated as some are more suited for recording or live band use, some mixing and many just enjoying music a most subjective aspect. So there are many models maybe way too many making it difficult, sort of picking shoes on the Internet - may or may not be the best fit or feeling.Bass heads that want a music "blast" might find other models more to that design "taste".I have recently tested many models and have just a few top pics at under the $300 price level and the HD518's are my best pic for all around listening. Low distortion with wide response using E.A.R. Senn's design science seems to work very well for wide choice of music. Sound quality is exceptional detailed stage with bass solid and clean as at all frequencies, complex thick dynamic music is recreated without a hint of limits. One of my favorites to grab to know just what the recording really sounds like and enjoy. No EQ required but if you want to bring up the low end some they will respond! Using a worthy headphone amp will bring out those qualities even more but not necessary unless your are an audio junkie like me.I would consider sound character to be half way between ATH-M50s and ATH-AD700s which I believe is a very nice headphone neighborhood. The fit and long term listening comfort is about the best I have used making them a top choice. Amazon's price range $75 - $130 for entry level audiophile phones that can perform as well as many more expensive units makes it an easy choice.

Recently, I became headphonantic and bought Turtle Beach PX5, HD280 Pro, HD598, and now HD518! Which headphone is the best? HD 598 hands down. However, that headphone leaks so much sound it can only be used at my man cave. It can be heard from 30 ft away w/ "decent" volume. Anyways, HD518 was kind of between HD280 PRO and HD 598. For HD280, I use it at work and it leaks litterally zero sound! I love it. However, the open stage experience is very short and it's not so comfortable. You'll always be aware that you're wearing a headset which kind of gets annoying after a while. With HD598, it feels so comfortable... I forget I'm wearing it in less than 5 seconds and massive open stage sound. So, that's where HD518 comes in... right in the middle. Most of the time, I'll be using this headset and love the extra kick of bass. So, if you're looking for headphone that gives open stage sound that's less than $100 then this is it. If you have a man cave where no one can hear you scream then I would recommend HD598. You will definitely know noticeable difference between HD518 and HD598. HD598 feels like you're at a live concert and HD518 is more at a night club.

I have a pair of HD 555 also, which are no longer available (replaced with more expensive HD 558). So instead of paying almost 2 bills for the 558, I gave the HD 518 a chance. I used a splitter cable so I could swap between the 555 and 518 to compare. They are constructed the same way, which is to say, extremely comfortable. I have a zillion different headphones, and this style is my favorite for sound quality and comfort. The biggest difference between the two is the 518 has much more bass. Some people like that, but I don't. I think it sounds fake. I personally think the 555 is a cleaner, more natural sound. BUT, if you didn't have the 555 to compare, you'd probably like the 518 if you are looking for an open headphone (where you can hear sounds around you). Before I did the comparison, I wore the 518s at work all day and loved them. It was only when I did the side by side comparison that it was obvious they put out much more bass than the 555s. But if you don't want to spend $180 on headphones (the HD 558), these are a good compromise. So, if I had to rank them: HD 558 top end (that's my assumption, I haven't tried a HD 558 yet), HD555 just below, followed by HD 518.
