We just replaced our older Medium PetSafe dog door (single flap) with this new extreme weather model. The older door held up for over 8 years with 4 Cairn terriers rushing in and out of the door. I wish I had a counter on the door just to know how many times it has been opened and closed. We never had to replace anything on the old model. We didn't have to replace the door we just felt it was time and liked the features of this extreme weather. The older model had one flap...this has 3 (the middle flap is an insulated flap). Our door is located on the side of the house that gets the most weather. We live in the higher elevations in New York so our winters can be extreme. We expect this model to hold up just as well. We installed this new extreme weather model about a month ago and it is proving to be just as durable as its predecessor.Here are few things you need to know if you are replacing your previous PetSafe door with this model. Although the flaps are the exact same size as the single flap model, the dog door frame itself was a little wider and a little taller requiring us to cut the opening in the person door a little to accommodate. We were hoping we could pull the old door off and slip the new door in...not the case. Also with the single flap door you can see light through it...with this model the insulated flap in the middle blocks the light so our dogs were a little reluctant to use it at first. The middle flap is also heavier requiring a little more effort by the dogs. They actually go through the door a little slower but they don't seem to be bothered by it. The extreme PetSafe dog door is actually quieter. I use to hear the other dog door slap shut but because the dogs go through this door slower and with the insulating flap this pet door is quiet.The screws are plastic and do the job AND they are flexible on purpose so if things don't line up perfect no problem...which in our case was a blessing.The security door snaps on instead of sliding in grooves like the older model. There is good and bad with this. The older model security door could be slid into place with one hand, this new model requires two hands. However, the older model allowed a little draft to get in...this new model completely covers the dog door frame keeping all the weather outside. The older security door was definitely more secure...this security door could get kicked in. The old security door would get iced over and frozen in the grooves during extreme weather because the frame of the old model was metal and would ice over on the inside during severe cold winter days. I'm thinking...no metal on this new model door, no grooves either, hopefully no icing and no troubles...we'll see.I would highly recommend this dog door. We had a severe thunderstorm come through a few weeks ago. This door didn't budge and didn't let any rain in even without the security door in place. I know with the wind and rain we were experiencing that the old single flap would have been blowing open unless we had the security door in place to keep the wind from pushing it open, but this extreme model held shut on its own. Nice!I'm not sure...but the review stating that the doors were fraying may be a poor installation. It is very important when installing to ensure the doors move freely within the opening. If you have the door cockeyed (out of square) or if you don't make the opening in the person door large enough meaning the sides of the dog door frame are bowing in slightly and thus the flaps rub the dog door framing ...the dog door will not hold up. Ensure the doors move very freely within it's space. You can test it out before tightening everything down. We pre-tested ours and the flaps rubbed slightly...so we cut the person door just a little bit more...tested again and the flaps didn't rub at all. Do it right and this dog door should last you many many years.

Took our 8-yo puppy a while to lose his fear for the noise this door makes.

Our main home is in south-central AZ, where outside temps never worry our dog. The three doors this one has scared our dog a little, but we needed it because it gets cold at our mountain cabin where we installed this device. After a week of coaxing by grandkids, and the expenditure of a lot of pieces of cheese as bait, he finally uses the door when he really has to, so we are satisfied. It is well-made, and reasonably easy to install though a wall, which we did.

Flaps are not durable

I purchased this door from a different supplier. Installation was fairly straight forward but I had to order replacement screws because the provided plastic screws broke easily during installation. The product itself I soon found to be a pain. After a few months of use by two active dogs the edges of the inside door flap began to wear down leaving a gap between it and the frame. This made it drafty and let the cold air in. Now, the outer flap has finally sheared off at the top. Replacement of just the outer flap is $35.00.. The inside flap needs replaced too but at these prices (from the manufacturer) I may as well buy a new door. The other immediate problem I had after buying the door is the panel that snaps on to cover the door. I quickly found that a dog can push it off from the outside if determined to get in and get to my female who was in heat. The panel may protect somewhat from drafts but does nothing for keeping a dog inside or outside. Overall, I would not consider buying another one of these doors.
