5Great for all day trail running
By David Tierney
I purchased this pack for very long distance unsupported trail runs. I am new at this distance and and will likely never be a professional. I do not race.Pros:* Minimal weight* Minimal bounce* Straps don't rub* Pack doesn't "crawl" up your back as you run (I hate that!)* Pockets on hips large enough for GPS, Smart phone, or a couple of Clif Bars, yet small enough that they don't abrade the inside of my forearms* Pockets on shoulder straps fits energy gells, my watch, my old-fashioned flip phone.* Fits my older Platypus Hoser 3-liter hydration bladder.* Easy to extract said bladder for refill without emptying contents of the pack.* Fits enough gear for changing temperatures/altitude/conditions and "essentials" on daylong backcountry trail runs.* Stretch pockets on side of pack for narrow water bottles (i.e., not Nalgene 1-Liters) perfectly sized and perfectly placed (I can reach them without removing the pack).Cons:* Light load compression should be better. The external storage bungee acts as a very limited compression.* My waist has not yet shrunk to be sufficiently narrower than my ribs to prevent the hip belt from riding up over the bottom of my ribcage. I think, however, that this is more the fault of my slight paunch than that of the pack. If my waist narrows, I shall update this review.WHY I GOT ITFor shorter distances (6 to 10 miles), I just need water which can be accomplished in a myriad of ways readily available. For longer distances (over 10 miles) I need some source of energy (gels or whatnot), and even for this there are plenty of waistpacks or running vests or hydration whatevers which will hold enough water, and a couple of energy bars and energy gels. However, I plan on running 50+ miles solo and largely without support through unfamiliar backcountry. There are plenty of packs which can be used to walk this distance, but the experience of running in most day packs goes from unpleasant to painful to injurious. These hiking specific packs tend to bind, rub, and bounce horribly when running.OTHER CHOICESOne solution was to limit what I carry and use a smaller running pack like the Nathan HPL #020. There are others in that genre, but the Nathan seems to be the gold standard for ultra endurance runners. Nathan calls it a "Race vest," and videos of long distance trail runners wearing this abound. I felt, however, that its 275 c.i. cargo capacity was insufficient. I want to carry some "just-in-case" essentials, as weather can change on a day-long run, I might be traversing sufficient altitude as to expect different conditions on top, and if I'm having a slow day or I get a little off course I might find myself on an accidental camp-out.My choices, then, looked to be limited to a few packs meant primarily for long-distance mountain biking as well as what the industry seems to be terming, "mult-use," "mult-sport," or "adventure racing" hydration packs. Manufacturers of these include Inov-8, Salomon, Camelbak, Gregory, and Osprey, but I didn't find examples of all of these packs in nearby stores to try on. I was, however, able to try on the Osprey Raptor 10, the Osprey Manta 20, and the Gregory Miwok 18, as well as the Osprey Talon 11.**As a caveat, I did not wear my running gear into the store, nor did I bring a full water bladder to insert into the pack. It's not a bad idea to wear what you will wear and load what you will carry to test the pack out in the store, but even more important is a good store return policy. You can get a feel for the pack in the store, but distance is the real test. I suppose its not illegal to run laps in your local outfitter, but it'll likely be long before mile 15 that the folks in green vests ask you to stop sweating on their samples. The Raptor and Talon are nearly identical in fit and feel, I found, so the main distinction was how I prefer to organize my gear. The Raptor had stretch hip pockets with no other seal (zipper, velcro, etc...) than the compression of the elastic (the Talon's hip pockets were stretch mesh with zipper closures) and the Raptor did not have the nifty shoulder strap pockets of the Talon. The other differences can easily be identified by an in-store comparison, but those I listed were important to me.The Manta seemed to fit fine (no bounce, no binding, no rubbing), but is designed (goofily, if you ask me) as a miniature version of a full-featured technical backpacking pack -- it even has an "integrated rain cover" -- which gave me less apparent room (the specs say the Manta 18 has more room than the Talon 11, but I couldn't find it) and it weighs almost twice the Talon. The Miwok 18 I found had insufficient support (stiffness) on the back panel. The Ospreys have a structured foam back panel which seemed to reduce pack bounce, and provides a protective barrier between the screwcap of my Platypus Hoser and my ribs. The Miwok has a truly nifty compression system which allows you to easily compress on the go. However, even when I really cinched this down there was a surprising amount of bounce. This is possibly at least partially related to the size. The Miwok 18 is identical to the Gregory Wasatch 12 except in capacity (18 and 12 liters respectively), the latter being the pack which would be more appropriate for my purposes. The Wasatch, however, wasn't in the store and since the Miwok and Wasatch were identical in every other way, I thought I'd still get a good feel. Also, the hip-belt pockets (I find these useful for accessing stuff on the go) on the Gregory, were so wide as to cause my forearms to brush against them while running. I can just imagine how nice my raw, bleeding arms would feel at the end of a 20 miles of that. The tethers of the shoulder straps and hip belt are stretchy and multi-part ("a set of flexible tendons," says Gregory). Though seemingly a major selling-point for Gregory, it did not make a difference in my brief, under-loaded, in-store test. The winner for me was the Osprey Talon 11. It had the capacity I needed, the weight was not obtrusive, the flop nearly absent, and had both hip-belt pockets and neat little elastic pockets on the shoulder straps. The MSRP is not awful ($89 when I looked), and various colors and sizes can be found on sale for 10 to 15 bucks less. I got mine for $65 bucks, shipping included. I just did a test run of around 7 miles/1300' cumulative elevation gain with a minimal load. The pack performed as I had hoped, up hill and down, over rock and river, ducking branches, and on straight stretches of monotonous tarmac. It stayed put, didn't beat me up, and carried my necessities with plenty of room.SIZINGI was the victim of some confusion in various online comments (not here, but elsewhere) about the sizing of this pack. The pack comes in two sizes, "S/M" and "M/L". Some comments suggested that the size difference is merely capacity, and if you go to the Osprey website's page for this pack the listing does not suggest otherwise. There is definitely a capacity difference (549 c.i. vs 671 c.i.), but there is also definitely a fit difference. If you go to the Osprey website's page detailing pack sizing (for all their packs), you will see the fit guide. I thought I would get the M/L for extra cargo capacity. The M/L that I ordered was a pack that flopped and rubbed and poked me in the lower back, contrary to the pack I had tried on which had fit so beautifully. I returned it and got the S/M which fit like a dream. Check the Osprey website pack sizing page to make sure you get the right one! This size difference, by the way, is available on the Osprey, whereas it was not available on the Gregory.

5I love my daypack
By Joe-Pros
I love my day pack. Light weight but strong. It feels like it is not even there. I have a bad back and this pack spreads the weight between my shoulders and hips. Pleanty of storage space, even with the water tank in it. Pleanty of areas to clip on items with c-clips. It looks cool too. Did I mention I love mine and I believe you would love one you bought too.

5Ultralight weight hiking pack
By Janice
The Exos pack is awesome. It has just enough padding on the hip belt to create comfort - provided you are an ultralight weight hiker. The straps are minimal as are the buckles - exactly what you would expect from an ultralight weight product. But - they are sturdy. I'm no easy on equipment and I haven't been "easy" on this pack but it has held up well. Plus - you won't find one lighter. Easy access to everything. Perfect pockets for that stuff you just have to stash. It's a very nice pack. I use the 34 as a daypack - particularly for extremely cold winer outings. I have all three sizes of this pack.

5fantastic pack
By G_to-the_D
This bag has been with me across two continents, in freezing mountain conditions and in the fiery desert. It is ultralight, holds a good amount of gear, and is very functional. The straps and pockets are well-designed. The trampoline back is a highly, highly appreciated feature, as it keeps air flowing between the bag and your back. The weight is just phenomenally light.Keep the weight under 30 pounds inside, definitely, and this pack will make you sing with joy. Also, the dimensions are within airline guidelines for carry-on, so you never have to check this bag!!

5Amazing Lightweight Pack!
By D. Rindt
The Exos 34 is the smallest member of Osprey's Exos lightweight pack series. I purchased this pack to use on an 11-day hike around Mont Blanc, where we would be spending some nights in mountain refuges. So I would not be needing to carry full overnight gear, but a few more items than I would need for just day hiking.I found this pack perfect for that trip. I was attracted to the light weight, yet it was sturdy enough that it suffered no noticeable wear. The suspension was very comfortable with the 15 or 20 lb load I was carrying--including DSLR camera and enough extra clothing for September in the Alps.I had seen the Exos 58 in a store but was not able to find the "34". So I bought the 34 from Amazon `sight unseen'. Although the three Exos packs are basically different sized versions of the same pack design, I discovered a few differences that are not easy to pick up when reading the Osprey website or the Amazon product description. While the 58 and 46 have a padded hipbelt, the 34's hipbelt is just mesh. When I first realized this, I was concerned that it would be uncomfortable, but I didn't find this to be so.The pocket configuration is also different among the three Exos variants. The Exos 34 also does not have the vertical zippered front pocket(s) featured on the 46 and 58. However I found the pockets that the Exos 34 does have to be quite adequate. I especially liked the stretchy front pocket, which was ideal for maps and an extra clothing layer. You definitely need a good rain cover if you expect some weather! The pack contents got wet in an intermittent rain on a hike before our trip. The brand-new (not Osprey) rain cover I purchased for the trip also failed to keep things dry on our one stormy day. So get a rain cover and test it.I'm a bit puzzled by Osprey's sizing method. Using the Osprey template, I was a perfect Small, but when I tried on several Osprey packs, I was told that the Small was a little too small from waist to shoulders, yet the medium's waistbelt was obviously too large. (I'm a 5'4" 110 lb female.) But whatever, the small size seems to work fine.

5Great use of space
By BeeDee
Nice bag, I've managed to feel very organised within it, mainly due to the the top hanging pocket and the smaller pockets on shoulder and waist straps. Interesting location for the bladder storage, it sits outside the main compartment and allows you to fit more into actual bag. Lightweight with lashpoints and compression strapping - I really like this bag for my summer overnighters, carrying bug bivvy, tarp, sleeping pad & bag, trekking pole, some food and a spare change of shirt etc etc. It ticks all the boxes for my lightweight minimalist trips, love it. My other packs are Osprey Exos 34, Lowe Alpine Nanon 50:60 and Lowe Alpine Expedition 75:95.

5Absolutely love this bag
By T. Rex
I use it for carrying general athletic stuff around the city, typically a water bottle, football gloves, clothes, rec specs, and sometimes shoes and a snack. The mesh top pouch is perfect for wallet/keys and anything that needs to be accessible. The side water bottle holders are very secure with the ties that wrap over them, but I now mainly use the stuff pocket on the outside because it is plenty secure and extremely convenient. The main pocket is large enough for shoes and miscellany, and could also comfortably hold a laptop if that's what you were using it for, although the lightweight construction means there's not a lot of padding for electronics. The main difference between this and other backpacks I've owned is that the construction quality is universally excellent and clearly designed for as light a bag as possible without sacrificing back and shoulder comfort. The straps have a kind of lightweight tesselated foam, and there are front straps to even out the loud. The bag itself is extremely light, but also quite strong. If you are looking for a bag with multiple large pockets and some padding for electronics then keep looking, but if you need a high quality lightweight bag then this is it.

5A 10 year old's review
By Colin
I asked my aunt for this for Christmas and it was soooooo awesome!!! I don't know what these people are saying that it falls apart ALL the time! The only thing that can fall off easily is the swing thinggy. But it's no big deal!! Just be carefull if you have a playful cat that wants to get your attention! Because you might almost lose the purple pitcher! The only dissapointment i had was the very limited amount of food on the plane. The only food they have is burgers with fries, pizza and bread, chesse and crackers, and that's pretty much it! But no biggy. I would reccomend this to every child in the world!

1Poor Quality!!!
By Jennifer
My daughter wanted this toy so badly. She received it as a Christmas present and only played with it twice because it is constantly falling apart. I spend more time reattching pieces to the jet than my daughter spends playing with it. All the super tiny pieces are hard to use as well (the seat belts are near impossible to attach and the head phones don't stay on unless you use tape). The barbie size beverages have small bases which make them hard to stay standing up. Please save your money, I do not recommend this plane wreck of a toy!!!

4Great Day Trekking Pack
By M&M
Was looking for a proper day-hiking pack, and the Osprey Sirrus 24 fit the bill. My first "real" backpack after suffering too much shoulder pain with a Walmart special for a year (started hiking July 2010), I bought this site unseen based on reviews and videos from all the major trekking websites. Amazon had the cheapest price by a couple bucks so I ordered here. I chose the Medium size for my 5'6" tall, short waisted torso. It fits very well although I keep wanting to shift it up higher to clear my lower back. But the abundant adjustment straps have really helped to give me a near-perfect, comfortable custom fit. Maybe a small would have been better? Definitely follow the measuring guides and get someone to measure you. Go here:[...]I like that this pack is made specifically for a woman. The shoulder pain is gone!!!The front straps have three zipper compartments, two on the lower belt and one on the shoulder strap at chest height. The chest compartment just fits my Razor cell phone perfectly. If you have anything larger, like an IPhone, forget fitting it in there! In the two lower belt compartments I keep my Nikon Coolpix, tissues, trekking pole tips and lip balm. Wish they were larger as I feel like I'm going to loose things when fishing for something inside them. I have to fight with them to get the camera in and out which is a problem if I want to take a quick pic. Again, a glove-tight fit. They are located at the pelvic side front which is somewhat hard to reach. I would have liked to be able to adjust them to be more toward the front, but Osprey must have designed them this way to keep them out of the way when bending the legs up a steep incline, which is good. The Zipper pulls are ring-shaped and easily grasped. Having the belt compartments zipping closed from front to back (rather than from back to front) would have been more to my liking, as the plastic rings stick out and rub on my arms when hiking sleeveless in the summer. Go twelve miles with this and you have a red welt. There are three back compartments which vary in size from large to small. The large fully unzipper-able compartment is perfect size for a first aid kit, headlamp, notebook, extra clothes and jacket, everything you need for a fun day, but is not be adequate for overnighters. I like that I can cinch down the load with the attached clasp tabs. In the medium size compartment, I put snacks, sunscreen and insect repellant. It's good for quick access supplies. It has a small license-sized mesh pocket. The small fixed compartment on top is not as easy to access with the pack on, as they advertise. It takes a little acrobatics to get to. But, it has a sewn-in bright orange key hook which is great. This pack needs more pockets inside the compartments!! I scavenged one off my old pack and sewed it into the large compartment, where small things seem to sink down and get lost, never to be found again. The side mesh pockets are good, easy access to water bottles, maps, gloves, etc. but too small for all the sundries I want at my fingertips. The trekking pole holder was one major reason I bought this pack. The how-to video shows a quick, easy process of stowing the poles, but it is not so easy reaching back with poles in hand to get them through the lower elastic cord, then through the front cord, hold the poles, press the toggle release button and pull the cord to tighten it around them. If I had three hands it would be no problem. Also, if you are sleeveless, the whole thing rubs against the tender upper arm area. I have to wrap a bandana around the top of my poles on summer treks to cover them and the protruding cord end. It's still great to put them away and have the hands free though. One other big reason for purchasing this pack is the stow-away rain cover which I have used more than once so far -- no worries about stuff getting wet. The cover is red, good for visibility on a dark day during hunting season. There is also a handy ice pick clasp at the back. You can retrofit it with a camelback too. The 3D tensioned mesh back panel really adds ventilation and comfort, but sheds off some of the surface of my fleece over-jacket.The colors are beautiful and the look of this pack is so cool. Overall, I love it and would highly recommend it for any day hiker, nubie or veteran.

4Great for hiking, ok for city use
By Anna Banana
This is a great backpack for hiking, and decent for city use too. I love the mesh back (no more sweaty back that makes you suddenly chilly when you take a break) and the frame is really amazing. With my old backpack, the same load felt about twice as heavy. The pack (in particular the waist strap) is really well-fitted to the female body. I've 5'4" and small build but I got the medium size because I'll be wearing heavy winter coats for a lot of the year. It cinched down to fit fine for summer hiking in only a tank top, but will definitely be big enough once it's puffy coat season too. A key for day-to-day use, my 17" laptop fits inside (even in a very hefty foam case) without straining the seams. The side mesh pockets are really great with their additional compression straps, although too narrow for a big nalgene which some might find unfortunate. Great for the aluminum type water bottles though. The only major problem is that the pockets are not very well suited for work/school use. For example, the bottom front pocket opens from the bottom of the pack. This is a handy pocket made much less easy to access because of this. This isn't super annoying if you're using the pack for hiking since I usually just toss the pack on its back when I'm getting things out, but in a work or especially in a school setting you're likely to be propping the pack up on its bottom and accessing it from the top, which makes this pocket impossible to get to. I also find the compression straps on the top to be a bit gratuitous. I never end up actually hooking them. But despite this I love the pack, and I think it's a good pack if you need something that works for both going to work/school, and going hiking on the weekends. I would purchase it again.

5Like it was made for me
By K. Williams
I love this pack. The hip pockets fit my camera and my GPS perfectly so that they are easily accessible without removing the pack, while the chest pocket fits my cell phone (an admittedly old LG Banter) snugly. Be sure to try this pack on somewhere before you buy it to ensure that you're getting the right size. When you get the right one, this pack fits like a dream. Hiking, I feel like I'm carrying nothing. The hip and chest belts distribute the weight so well that the pack and everything in it feel like they're part of me. It moves with me as I turn and scramble, and keeps my back from getting that big sweat spot that you get with normal packs. It can be a bit of a struggle to get a full 3 liter reservoir in the designated pocket. It takes a bit of finagling because of the structure of the frame holding the middle of the pack off your back. I imagine a smaller reservoir would be easier, but I haven't tried it. Once the reservoir is in the pack, though, it easily stays in place and is easily removed later.I also haven't tried out the grab and go pole system, as I don't generally hike with poles, so unfortunately I can't comment on that. I actually like to keep the end of my water tube in the front loop.Overall, I don't think I would change anything on this pack. It's comfortable, versatile, and functional. Plus, the purple is gorgeous. I could live in this pack.

4Binoculars
By Brian M Slater
They work good, but the universal camo doesn't blend in with anything. Comes with carrying case which is black. I think it should be camo too.

5Perfect size

Turned out just to be what I wanted, wound up being better than the camelback I had considered. Love the adjustability of the straps & the magnetic valve holder. Would most definitely recommend!

5Let me count the ways
By Emily Beck
Used this on a recent trip to Oregon where I did day hikes almost every day I was there. I also used it as my carry on for my flight (took out the bladder for the flight). The backpack looks really small but can hold a lot! I really appreciate all of the various pockets and organizers it kept everything nice and easy to find. It was lightweight even when it was full of water - hardly noticed it while I was hiking.Far and away my favorite feature is the magnet on the water nozzle - really awesome! So nice to take a sip of water and then just place it back on the shoulder strap.Love the color too - very nice orange/red color - not too bright.Great purchase!

5Impressive!
By st croix glock
The craftsmanship shines through. If you love cutting wood manually or just appreciate fine tools this is the axe for you. The only complaint I have, and its almost not worth mentioning, is that the hardwood handle is a bit rough. I'll wear gloves the first time I use it and it should knock down all of the roughness. The axe came sharp enough to shave with, yet has a good working edge. The leather sheath that protects the edge is well made too. I would buy this again in a heart beat. And I highly recommend Duluth Pack as a seller. I ordered it late on a Sunday night and it arrived on Tuesday morning.

5Very good quality
By shane morton
This is the second Gransfors Bruks axe I have bought. The first was the smaller forest axe and have no issues with either one keeping an edge or chopping a tree. Both are very well balanced.

4Good Quality
By Wild Boar Ranch
This is pretty pricey Axe, it's good quality, but awfully expensive. I've heard it referred to as an heirloom Axe, not sure it will last long enough for that, but it is a well made Axe.It comes with a leather cap, however it only covers the edge down on the blade about an inch. For the money I would have though they should have provided a leather sheath for the blade as a whole.

Discounted Gransfors Bruks Outdoor Axe

Gransfors Bruks Outdoor AxeBuy Gransfors Bruks Outdoor Axe

Gransfors Bruks Outdoor Axe Product Description:

  • 2.5" Face
  • Grain-Leather Sheath

Product Description

The Outdoor Axe has been designed to have numerous uses: limbing trees, chopping and splitting firewood, and also as a heavy knife for woodcarving or simply cutting food. Despite its size, the Outdoor Axe can even be used for felling trees when kneeling, thanks to its relatively long handle and heavy head. The axe has a 2 1/2" face and a 14.75" hickory handle and the head weighs 1 lb. It features a throat collar, and comes with a full grain-leather sheath. Gransfors Bruks axes are forged by professional blacksmiths that take great time and effort in their trade. The proof of this professionalism is in the way they are able to forge axes with such precision and beauty. There is no need to stone, grind, smooth or paint the axes in order to eliminate imperfections. At Gransfors Bruks, the forging crafter is allotted sufficient time to complete each axe or hatchet with the care necessary. The smiths do their best forging right from the beginning in order to produce the finest axes and hatchets in the world.

5The best hands down!
By Alaska Moutian Man
I have Three Gransfors Bruks axes/hatchets. I just can not say enough about the quality. First rate. There just is not another axe out there that can out do a bruks. They come razor sharp. I would recommend to do a little research and match the type of axe or hatchet to the chore that you will use it for. There is a reason that these are the best of the best. I can say without hesitation that you will love the products from this company. Buy with complete confidence.

5Gransfors outdoor axe
By drthu
I bought this axe for steelhead fishing and camping and trailblazing in Alaska. The attraction was its reputed additional ability to split wood (due to a wedgier blade). Not only does it split wood, but it is a perfectly balanced axe and very efficient at cutting down small trees and making tent poles, stakes, etc. The wedgier blade actually improves cutting and shaping performance due to the waste being readily "split' away from the workpiece. The axe is knife sharp and the HIGH QUALITY forged steel really holds an edge which is easily restored using a small pocket sized wetstone. The 14 1/2 inch length affords very good axe speed, and thus, penetration and cutting. A lightweight pair of kevlar chaps is highly recommened. Overall, a nearly perfect tool and worth the $174

4Good axe, but...
By Thor H.
Good axe, but the heads a little light for chopping anything other than very small pieces of wood. Easily portable...
