Cleo is Spooktacular!

This Cleo doll is the one that started my Monster High collection. I didn't know anything about the cartoon or books at the time but I took one look at this doll in the store and I was sold! As a kid I was really into reading about Egypt, pyramids, mummies, etc. As a grownup toy collector I just LOVE seeing all the cool dolls that are coming out these days!I think Monster High dolls are here to stay. It is a cute cartoon and the toys are really fun and original looking. For those who don't know, the students of Monster High are all the teenage children of various monsters. Since I am a big horror movie fan, I find the toys and cartoons especially entertaining. There is a certain humor and camp value that horror fans can appreciate. They aren't meant to be dark, sinister or scary but are more about paying homage to horror films of the old days.Cleo is unique, original and freakishly beautiful. She is the daughter of the Mummy and resembles a movie version of Cleopatra. Her makeup is glamorous and dramatic, complete with blue-green lipstick. This version of the doll is dressed to go to Gloom Beach in a fabulous yellow and black swimsuit made to look like mummy bandages, a sheer blue-green bikini wrap. She is also wearing fabulous blue-green platform sandals. She has bandage accessories on her wrist and leg and she also comes with a matching Egyptian style fan and a pair of blue-green sunglasses. Cleo's hair is black with bangs and sparkly gold streaks. It is surprisingly easy to brush and feels like good quality hair. The clothing is easy to remove and has Velcro.Every Monster High doll has a different face mold. The expression on Cleo's face says a lot about her personality. After I checked out the webisodes online, I discovered that the impression I got from the doll was 100% correct. Cleo is proud and bossy, somewhat snobby, not always nice to other monsters...and this made me like her even MORE! Deep down, Cleo does have good heart and she is capable of the occasional kind act (shhh, don't tell anyone, it'll totally ruin her rep) and she isn't actually evil, just difficult. This doll captured the essence of Cleo's "complex" character perfectly. She is an Egyptian princess and she wants to RULE!As far as durability, I DO have some issues with this line of toys. The detaching limbs can be a good and bad thing for collectors and people who do miniature scenes. The dolls are easy to pose and the detaching limbs can be useful for displays (like a Halloween horror scene) when you need severed body parts...BUT on the other hand, the limbs can fall off when you don't want them to! This also does NOT help when dressing the doll. The joints also seem to loosen over time, especially if you pose them a lot. Grownup collectors can lose things too. I have not lost any doll parts but I do think the design of the body could be improved. If the joints were tighter this would be a better toy. Some collector's dolls for grownups are a lot more fragile than Monster High dolls but since these are aimed at mostly kids, I think Mattel should consider making some small changes to the joints.I have bought other Monster High dolls since Cleo and I am very happy with them. I will probably buy more at some point and I hope Mattel improves the durability of this line. Monster High is an AWESOME concept and is certainly the best thing Mattel has done in a while! My only advice to parents, kids and collectors is this: Monster High dolls are on the fragile side and they aren't for very young children. Use common sense, be careful with them and be sure to take note of the instructions and age suggestions. Overall, this is a great toy. It is really fun, original and beautiful!

On a gloomy high

I made out like crazy at Toys R Us. They had full shelves today. I really need to stay away from that store now. My daughter is going to flip when she sees her dolls this year. This cleo de nile doll comes in a narrow box, similar to the barbie beach dolls. They are a little more money that the barbie ones but not by much. They rang up $14.99 for these. They don't have the pet with them, but they carry some beach accessories. You pay the additional $5 or so for the uniqueness. And this doll is beautiful I think it fills that Bratz void. Very nice doll. Treat gently and save pennies. Prices should come down after Xmas, but really, Toys R Us has done a great job stocking them this season.
