Infinite voltage control gives you the flexibility to manually set the machine when welding aluminum, stainless steel, or anytime you want to set your own parameters on mild steel. Welds thickest material in its class! The Millermatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP has the highest output in its class. It can weld from 24 ga - 3/8 in (0.8 - 9.5 mm) mild steel in a single pass on 230 V. Finally a reliable and economical way to weld aluminum. Smooth-Start patented technology provides a smooth, spatter-free start. Its the best-starting machine in the small MIG machine category. No pop gun starts and virtually no spatter to clean up. MILLER EXCLUSIVE! Durable cast aluminum drive system incorporates dual-groove quick-change drive roll and spring-loaded tension arm with calibrated tension knob, all designed to make set up easier and faster. Miller's exclusive ''''Tip Saver'''' short circuit protection shuts down output when tip is shorted to the work. Extends contact tip life and protects internal components from damage. I wanted a somewhat portable welder for general welding and repair from sheet metal to heavy bar stock. I am not a welder by trade so I chose a MIG welder because MIG is easier to learn and use for the occasional fabrication or repair compared to other welders. This welder has performed perfectly for me. The Miller 211 weights about 70 pounds so while I wouldn't call it lightweight, I can carry it and load it in and out of vans. The fellow at the welding supply say they rarely see one in for repair. If you decide to forego this rather pricy unit and buy a cheap imported model keep your receipt because they break. Too often I've seen people waiting in line to return those at the local import tool store. The big advantage other than Miller quality is the MVP feature (runs on both 120 and 240 Volts). This feature simple to use and appears to be idiot proof. There are no switches to flip to change voltage. You change plug adapter, takes a few seconds, and plug in. You cannot plug the wrong adapter into the wrong outlet. Typical 240V welder extension cords (ones that have compatible prongs) are heavier gauge than is necessary for this welder and will set you back at least a $80 for a 20 foot cord. If you need to weld something that is a hundred feet from the nearest 120V outlet you can run a 10 or even 12 gauge 120V extension cord which you may already own and is much less expensive. For example, I work on equipment where it is easier to run and extension cord to the work than dismantle and/or move the work to the welder. If it is windy or I don't want to bother with moving the tank, I load flux core wire.Although it will make a 3/8 inch single pass weld when plugged into 240V, it is easy enough to make an extra pass when necessary if you are using 120V.I often plug into a 240V 30 Amp circuit and make "T" welds that join 1 inch square 1018 mild steel bars (to make tools) and the welds are strong. I know because I hammer on these tools for hours doing smithing and no welds have broken. I have also butted inch square bar to 1.5x2 bars with no problem by preheating the bars in the forge as is normal welding practice. Of course I bevel the joints first, also normal practice. The Auto Set feature is handy and works. I rarely vary from it. I have only used this welder on steel, including tool steel.Perhaps my only complaint, and it is minor, is that I like to bolt welders to their cart. There are two bolt holes in the bottom of the welder that are accessible by lifting the cover that access the MIG wire feeder. The bolt holes on the other side cannot be reached (without dismantling the welder).
