5Lovely Model of an Aircraft with an Interesting Past
By Daniel L. Berek
Though Boeing designed the Boeing 757 as a short- to medium-range airliner, this airliner has found a new role as a long-range jet for thin routes, her original role being usurped by Boeing's own Boeing 737-900 and (to a lesser extent) the Airbus A321. The aircraft of this subject, N717TW, is a model -231, originally delivered to TWA in 1999. Even then, this aircraft flew the Atlantic to points in Western Europe. The jet found itself repainted in American Airlines colors when that airline purchased the assets of bankrupt TWA. Unlike American's 757 own aircraft, this bird (along with a few other ex-TWA siblings) was powered by Pratt & Whitney rather than Rolls-Royce engines. This fact made the aircraft more suitable for Delta's fleet expansions, which is how it ended with that airline. In Delta service, this 757 was again flying overseas routes, as well as destinations in the Caribbean. She was retrofitted with Boeing's patented winglets, giving the aircraft a significant boost in economics and range.I wanted a model of a Boeing 757 that has flown throughout the Caribbean (especially Puerto Rico), the US, and Europe; this particular airplane fit the bill very nicely. The alliance colors are a matter of taste - some people like them, others do not. I like the Skyteam colors better than the Star Alliance scheme myself; I chose a model in these colors because they appear on aircraft of other airlines throughout the world, KLM being a noteworthy example. To me it was like having a plane that accentuated world citizenship rather than loyalty to an airline brand (though I like Delta). Again, it's a matter of taste, and the rest of the review applies to any of Gemini Jet's 1:200 scale 757-200 offerings.First, I usually do not purchase models in 1:200 scale. They are hefty and, yes, pricey. For most of my collecting needs, the smaller 1:400 scale is just fine. However, there are times when I yearn for a particular aircraft in this larger scale, mostly for the extra detail offered. Gemini Jets has done a wonderful job with this release; the proportions, markings, and overall quality are excellent. The model is a joy to hold and behold. In 1:200 scale, Gemini Jets offers a display stand (a pretty but rather flimsy chrome affair) and the choice of displaying the aircraft gear up or down. The entire model, except for the engines, is made of diecast metal - that includes the tail and winglets. I would have preferred the engines having been made of metal, even if it meant that the turbine blades didn't turn (a nice but not important feature in my view). The same would apply to 757s with Rolls-Royce engines (the US Airways example looks particularly nice). The landing gear is nicely done, with a steerable nosewheel and rubber tires. Because the gear snaps in, I would not recommend taxying this aircraft or perform touch-and-goes. And, yes, do heed the warnings of small parts. This is a precision model; if handled roughly, small parts can and do break off, posing a choking hazard. Then again, I do not envision anyone using a $60 item as a toy. What you get is a beautiful model, with excellent craftsmanship both in painting and detail.
