By Kevin Hung
I'm currently driving the speakers with a Denon AVR-791 and they sound fantastic for movies and games. At first, I was only looking for a simple home-theater-in-a-box. But after heading into stores and hearing them in person, my wife and I realized that we weren't going to get what we wanted from box sets like the Klipsch HD500, Klipsch Quintet IIIs(with an added sub), or any of the Bose Acoustimass sets. But you have to pay for more quality. So we decided to concentrate our budget into just buying 2 decent floorstanding speakers, and adding additional components in the future as our budget allowed. We auditioned the Klipsch CF-50s and found them to be a marked improvement over the box sets, but the mid/bass was still a bit hollow, and the highs were painfully shrill. We loved the Vienna Acoustics Bach and Mozart Grande speakers, and they were being sold at an amazing discount as used products. Unfortunately, though they were just incredible for music, our primary use of these speakers would be for movies and games, and these just didn't have the kick we wanted. Polk's tsi400 and tsi500 speaker lines were also great and a very close runner-up to the Deftech bp-8020st. The tsi400 and tsi500 both had more clarity in the high range than the 8020st, but my wife felt that the highs were too shrill for her. The 8020st still had solid highs and dramatically better bass response than the polk tsi400/500 due to the integrated subwoofers. At this pricepoint, we could have also purchased a cheap separate subwoofer for the polks, but after trying out several subwoofers in this price range, we found that on the whole, buying a separate subwoofer on the cheap would give us boomy and muddy bass. The deftech bp8020st had tight punchy bass combined with great mid/highs. This sealed the deal for us and made us side with the 8020sts over the polk tsi500s(w/ a separate subwoofer). The 8040st produces the same mids and highs, but is married to a larger subwoofer. But our 13x20 room doesn't need a huge subwoofer, and we could save money and take our time to buy a good standalone subwoofer in the future if we find that we need one. So far, we haven't found the need for one.I would have given 5 stars, but the polk tsi500 did have more clarity in the highs. Also, take some time to think about how you'll position these speakers in your house. These speakers will fire to rear and to the sides, so it will need some space from the walls, I've only got about 12inches from the rear and 14 inches from the sides with 9 feet between them and 9 feet from the main listening position. I've heard comments from other deftech owners that they've found the best speaker placement to be 2feet or more! (But mine still sound great with the limited space that I have). Also, bear in mind that each of these will need to be plugged into an AC outlet since they each have active subwoofers contained inside.

By Peter
I recently bought the def tech 8020 and I am super satisfied with the sound quality. I use them with a new pioneer receiver and primarily play cd as well as Pandora via AirPlay. I just love it. The speakers handle rock, bluegrass and techno very well, but they shine most playing Classical music. You really think you've got the orchestra right in front of you. The built in subwoofers are ample for our bedroom (20x30). I think I will add satellites and a center speaker for complete 5.1 surround sound ( and will leave the remaining 2 channels for the patio).

By Fred G.W.
The speakers met & exceeded my expectations. They replaced a set of Tower speakers by Bang & Olufsen, which were high-quality.I'd recommend this product without reservation.
