By the Glipper
I've had this watch for a little more than two months. I had the Seiko this replaced for over thirty years and it always kept perfect time between battery changes. The old one still looks good, but I decided that after thirty years it was due an honorable retirement; so I replaced the watch. This is one of Seiko's "Kinetic" line of watches that does not need a battery or to be wound. It charges itself by the movement of your arm, but unlike most self winding watches it does not need to be worn every day to keep it running. You can build up a charge that can last up to six months, and you can check the amount of charge remaining. This is perfect for me as I am retired and do not wear my watch every day.The watch is beautiful to look at, it is keeping perfect time, and if it lasts as long as my last Seiko it should be the last watch I will ever buy (I'm 65).

Having enjoyed wearing Seiko watches for well over 30 years, I had high expectations for my first Seiko kinetic. These high expectations have be met. The watch is keeping excellent time and I am pleased with its smart style; its understated, non-flashy elegance complements my conservative style. Its two-tone colors go well with the entire color spectrum. I am very pleased to have gotten this excellent timepiece at a price far, far less than high-priced watch brands. My only minor irritation is its serial number is too tiny to read.I look forward to many years of enjoying this timepiece and knowing that I will never have a battery die at a very impractical time.

By Kitchen Dude
My wife bought me the predecessor of this model, the Seiko 5M62, about 11 years ago for Christmas. Like this watch, the selling point was "never needs a battery". So imagine my surprise when, about 3 weeks ago, the watch stopped. I gently shook the watch to wind it and it started up again. It ran fine all day, but the next morning, the same thing happened. The watch had stopped. After a bit of Googling, I found an article online describing how the Kinetic models work. It turns out that there is, in fact, a reserve battery in the watch that is recharged by the kinetic motion of your arm's movements. It was this battery that had finally failed. The battery apparently has a life of 8-10 years and can be replaced by a jeweler. Not a big deal, but it's worth knowing, because at some time in the future your watch will inexplicably stop working. There is (or rather, was, in the case of my old watch) no mention of this in the owner's manual or product literature.Having said that, I nevertheless recommend this watch. In fact, I just bought one here on Amazon as a replacement for my old one. Not because the battery finally died, but because the old one was looking a little scuffed up and worn. I love the watch. My only complaint is that the people selling them are not totally up front about the battery eventually needing replacement.
